Expert Jury votes Schloss Johannisberg 12th of the best vineyards worldwide

"World's Best Vineyards 2020" assigns Fürst von Metternich- Winneburg’sche domain Schloss Johannisberg in the Rheingau an outstanding 12th place. This is the best ranking of a German winery this year. The annual ranking of the 50 best wineries worldwide evaluates the wineries from a tourism point of view with a clear target: to increase the domains global attention and to offer wine connoisseurs an orientation and awaken their desire for wine tourism. For the first time in the history of the award, the best list was published in a virtual ceremony on 13 July 2020. The front-runner is the Argentinean estate Zuccardi Valle de Uco, followed in second and third place by Bodega Garzón from Uruguay and the Austrian Domäne Wachau. In total, two German wineries were among the 50 winners.

Experience 300 years of Riesling history at first hand

The excellently placed Domäne Schloss Johannisberg is considered the oldest Riesling winery in the world. Today, the exclusive wines with their authentic and individual character typical of the region inspire fans around the globe. They are listed at the best gastronomic addresses in the world and regularly achieve the highest results and awards at international wine competitions. A real treasure trove for wine connoisseurs is the Bibliotheca Subterranea, the 900-year-old underground abbey cellar. Here, numerous Riesling masterpieces from the 300-year history of the estate are stored, which are regularly auctioned at the highest prices. "We are very proud of the award, especially as it is happening in our anniversary year. It brings us even more into the focus of the international wine scene and we are confident that we will be able to further increase our visitor numbers with new guests," say the domain's CEOs, Stefan Doktor and Marcel Szopa, happily.

Boost for wine tourism

More than 500 leading wine experts, sommeliers and travel journalists from all over the world vote the Top 50 list “World’s Best Vineyards”. The organizers, William Reed and this year's guest partner Sonoma County Winegrowers, want to help the wineries gain appropriate attention through the ranking. At the same time, the list is an appreciation of the regional characteristics of the most diverse wine-growing regions and the special products that result from them. Thus, especially in these extremely tense times for the tourism industry, it is intended to awaken the desire for wine trips to prestigious international addresses.
